"I've been in enough bodies to know that the flesh is just a costume."
THE ENVOY CORPS
Envoy conditioning is the most intensive psychological programme ever developed. It was designed to solve a specific military problem: how do you deploy a soldier across interstellar distances, needlecast into an unfamiliar body on an unfamiliar world, and have them be effective immediately? The answer was to fundamentally rewire the human psyche.
An Envoy reads situations with preternatural accuracy, processing social and environmental data at a level that borders on precognition. They adapt to new sleeves within hours. They suppress emotional responses that would incapacitate normal humans. They are, in the most literal sense, post-human — and the UN disbanded the Corps precisely because they were too effective to be safely controlled.
POLITICAL IDEOLOGY
Quellism is the revolutionary ideology of Quellcrist Falconer — a philosopher, poet, and guerrilla leader who led the most significant uprising in the history of Harlan's World. Her central argument was simple: a society where the wealthy can live forever and the poor are stored on ice is not a civilisation. It is a machine for the production of suffering.
Kovacs was a Quellist. He fought in the uprising. He watched it fail. The ideology never left him — it runs beneath every case he takes, every decision he makes, every moment of violence he enacts or endures.
"We are all just data. The only difference between the living and the dead is the quality of their storage medium."
— QUELLCRIST FALCONER

Elias Ryker's sleeve — a Bay City police officer's body
Re-sleeved on Earth to solve the murder of Laurens Bancroft, a centuries-old Meth who claims he was killed but has no memory of his own death. A noir detective story in a body that isn't his, in a city he doesn't know, working for a client he doesn't trust.
Kovacs' state: Freshly released from storage. Disoriented, dangerous, and carrying the weight of a failed revolution.

CURRENT SLEEVE

A corporate war on a distant colony world. Kovacs is a mercenary now, hired to retrieve an alien artefact of incalculable value from behind enemy lines. A war novel that asks what happens to a soldier who has fought in too many bodies across too many centuries.

CURRENT SLEEVE
His original birth sleeve — his own body
Back on Harlan's World in his original body, Kovacs is being hunted by a younger version of himself — a previous Kovacs Stack that has been re-sleeved by the authorities. The hunter and the hunted are the same man. A novel about identity, memory, and what survives across centuries.
Kovacs' state: Haunted, returning home, confronting everything he has been and everything he has lost.
"The body is just a sleeve. The question is whether the person wearing it is worth keeping."
